Why the flowers? He just wants to make people smile
When El Molino Central popped up as a bright spot, we all took notice. Even before the flowers, it was beautifully appointed, but the flowers are definitely a show-stopper.
The Artist responsible for the 3-D art installation on El Molino’s walls was inspired by the end of Covid-19 closures. Mark Marthaler wanted to celebrate our return to the world with flowers. Like flowers bloom in the Spring, so did his art installation bloom at the end of our seemingly two-year- long hibernation last Winter.
The purpose of the flowers? He just wants to make people smile.
Judging from the reaction of just about everyone passing by the restaurant, his plan was a success. I asked Marthaler what he thought of Artist Robert Holden’s painted flowers going up on Plain Jane’s — he loves them. Marthaler would love to see more cheerful projects like this along the corridor. “These are strange times, and we keep getting hit with more things to fear, like ‘monkeypox.’ It’s important to remember to smile.”
These flowers definitely bring a smile to the springs. Marthaler would like to see the springs decorated in a theme from time to time, each business putting their own take on it, from hearts, to birds, to flowers. He’s open to taking on more projects of this nature if you have an idea! What would be Marthaler’s wish? To cover Sonoma City Hall in flowers, or something cheerful, but only because the Eiffel tour is not within walking distance. Maybe someday. All buildings in the Springs should have art on them. As the paintings fade on some of the buildings, we should reach out to more artists to do installations like this or murals on all our buildings along the highway. I love the new flower paintings and paint on the Plain Jane building. Away with beige and white, in with color.
