In its final Sonoma City Council meeting of 2023, the Sonoma City Council appointed member John Gurney to serve as mayor in 2024. He assumes the year-long post held by Sandra Lowe.
Gurney, elected to the council in 2022, had been vice-mayor.
Lowe was thanked by her peers for significant leadership, particularly her commitment to advocating for the arts. In standard protocol for Sonoma, Gurney was then, by unanimous vote, rotated into the top spot. The new vice mayor is Patricia Farrar-Rivas.
Lowe and fellow councilmember Jack Ding will be up for reelection in November of 2024.
