In the immediate aftermath of the 2017 fires, a rallying slogan began appearing on signs throughout the Sonoma Valley: The Love In The Air Is Thicker Than The Smoke.
In the wake of recent fires, a new art project — dubbed Love In The Air 2020 — invites community members to show support for first responders to the Glass Fire by creating a handmade thank you note.
Sonoma Vice Mayor Rachel Hundley is spearheading the effort to collect distribute the homemade cards and postcard. They can be mailed (see below) or dropped off at a dedicated box outside of Sonoma city hall. The deadline is October 19.
“Our first responder heroes have once again stepped up to save and protect us,” Hundely posed. “Over the last month, the Glass Fire caused devastating damage to both Sonoma and Napa counties, and the fast and expert work of local and visiting first responders successfully protected lives and prevented further damage to homes and businesses.”
The creative process is not only a show of gratitude, Hundley says, but also a chance “to reflect on what happened three years ago, and recognize how far we have come since then”.
To be part of it: Make a card or poster up to the size of a piece of construction paper sending love and gratitude to local and visiting first responders. Mail directly or drop-off your contribution at the addresses below. Organizations can also collect contributions separately and drop them off at one of the addresses below or arrange a pick-up with Rachel through the contact information below.
