Courage, community and charity of choice, that’s David Cochran’s goal. And as the co-founder of the Echelon Gran Fondo, the May 12 bicycling event that begins and ends on Sonoma Plaza, he feels Sonoma is the perfect place for all three.
“Right from the very beginning we received an enthusiastic welcome from the hospital, city council and local charities,” said Cochran. “Since committing to Sonoma, we continue to be impressed. There is so much community pride in this town.”
Just two years ago, Echelon held its inaugural cycling event in Napa. It was a success, with a focus on fundraising for local cancer centers. That’s no different here with Sonoma Valley Hospital on board, but why move to Sonoma?
Echelon has hooked up with Sonoma Valley Hospital who has a connection with the team doctor (Sonoma’s Prentice Steffen) for Team Garmin Barracuda, America’s top professional cycling team. With the Amgen Tour of California starting in Santa Rosa, the day after the Sonoma Gran Fondo, Team Garmin will be in town, riding in the Echelon Event and supporting Charity of Choice, which includes over 40 local charities.
Cochran said Sonoma is unique in that it has everything needed to create a great party. “The day will start with the National Anthem being sung by Sonoma Valley High School student, Ella Krikorian and end with the Whiskey Thieves.”
In between, participants and visitors will enjoy a feast coordinated by Sheana Davis of Epicurean Connection. The event is really a showcase of what makes the town an epic destination, “and oh yeah, the rides are amazing.”
Might Sonoma become a permanent home for the Gran Fondo? “The early read is yes,” Cochran said. “Our registration has been our strongest yet and the town is taking on the feeling of home.”
There is still time to register for the ride and Echelon is strongly encouraging local participation, and not just from spandex warriors. There is something for riders of all ages and abilities. Options include an 11-mile ride for kids or adults. “Mountain or cruiser will get the same treatment as the 50 and 75 mile riders,” Cochran promises.
Participants are encouraged either ride for fun or join one of the many fundraising teams by going to Echelongranfondo.org.
“The Sonoma charities have really embraced the idea of Charity of Choice,” said Charity Coordinator Linda Klein. “Teams like Sweetwater Spectrum have been all over this event, raising over $2,500. Other teams are really getting into the spirit.”
Team Tweed, raising money and awareness to save the Petaluma Adobe State Park, has adopted a genteel approach to the ride. “I can’t wait to see them rising in their 20’s vintage cycling clothes,” Klein said. “It’s much more stylish than all the spandex you see.”
