‘John’s March’ against cancer takes to racetrack

Sonoma Raceway hosts a unique fundraiser on Saturday, as the public can help fight stomach cancer and enjoy a symbolic “march” around the raceway’s 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course.

imagesJohn’s March has raised more than $40,000 over the past three years and is the only major fundraiser for gastric cancer on the West Coast. It is named in honor of longtime raceway Vice President of Media and Community Relations, John Cardinale, who passed away in 2013 after a two-year battle with stomach cancer.

All proceeds benefit No Stomach for Cancer (www.nostomachforcancer.org).

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the march begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, January 17.

Sonoma Raceway is located at 29355 Arnold Drive.

Cost for the event is a suggested minimum donation of $40, which includes the walk/run around the 2.52-mile road course, a T-shirt and light refreshments. New for 2015, 5K and 10K race distances will be marked with timers, for those who prefer a longer race distance. Children, dogs (on leash), everyone is welcome! No scooters or skateboards will be allowed on track.

Advance registration is not required; walk-ups are welcome on Saturday. Please note: only cash and checks will be accepted at the track. Checks should be made payable to No Stomach for Cancer, Inc.

No Stomach for Cancer is a non-profit group that works to increase awareness and education about stomach cancer, provide a support network for affected families and support research efforts for screening, early detection, treatment and prevention of stomach cancer. Stomach cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the world, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information.
