Marie Lesoudier, general manager of Laura Chenel Chevre, presided Saturday over a ribbon cutting for the company’s new, 30,000 sq ft. production facility on Eighth Street East.
Production should begin next month, with the first products from the new plant in stores early next year.
Laura Chenel Chevre, perhaps the best-known American goat cheese brand, had been produced at the old Stornetta dairy on Hwy 12. The new facility is much larger, Lesoudier said, and will allow the development of new varieties.
She told a group of food professionals Saturday that it was important to keep the company near Sonoma. ‘We’re good for each other,” she said.
A forerunner of the artisan food movement, Chenel is no longer involved in the business. She sold her company in 2006 to a top French cheese producer, the Laiteries H. Triballat family.
The new plant is located in the Carneros Business Park on Eighth Street East.
