Apaches speed past Dragons, 20-3

As far as opponents go, the Sonoma Valley Dragons will probably not see an athlete quite like Vallejo’s Rashad Ross for the rest of the season.
The Apache senior wide receiver, defensive back and return man put on a show all over the field Friday night at Arnold Field, with three interceptions and a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown, leading his team to a 20-3 victory over the Dragons.
The Apaches were the first team on the board in the first half, and the only team, for that matter, as junior quarterback Ronald Beverly found Robert Edmonson on a slant, and the speedy senior rumbled 57 yards for the touchdown, giving the visitors a 7-0 lead at the half.
The teams traded field goals in the 3rd quarter before the Dragons were forced to punt to Ross with less than a second to go in the period. After the punt from Sam Wallace, Ross took it on the right side of the field, saw open field to the far left side of the field, and made his return. He was hardly touched as he ran into the endzone to end the quarter and give the Apaches a 17-3 lead.
Ross also did a good job shutting down Steve Filippi, although Filippi had a strong game with six catches and 99 yards. The Dragons committed four turnovers, including a costly one on a fumbled handoff exchange in the Vallejo red zone that stopped the Dragons chances at tying the contest.
The Dragons are now 0-2 for the first time since 2005, when they started 0-3. They will host Maria Carillo in a non-league game on Friday night at Arnold Field, starting at 7:30 p.m. The Pumas lost their first game of the year to four-time defending Sonoma County League champion Casa Grande Saturday afternoon, 35-12.
