Sun Eats Gift Guide: Get saucy

Mia’s Kitchen Sriracha Pasta Sauce (Photo: Mia’s Kitchen)

Not all of us are kitchen savvy enough to make our own tomato sauce (or…perhaps just lazy, right?). That is when we thank our lucky eating stars for pre-made sauce.

We two fabulous producers of tomato sauce here in Sonoma Valley that make great sauces, which make for great stocking stuffers.

Mia’s Kitchen was started by Mia Sebastiani, and throws back to the Sebastiani family’s Italian heritage and in the food industry past.

Using locally grown tomatoes, the sauce’s are made in Sonoma Valley and feature tasty flavors like Sriracha, kale, portobello, and a classic marinara.

My favorite is the Sriracha, which has a mild spiciness that will please any palette ($12). miaskitchen.com

PRT_M102_SMALL_20140701_111950VJB Cellars is known for Italian wine and it’s happenin’ tasting room. However, they also make wonderful specialty food, created by Chef Maria Belmonte, who oversees VJB’s La Cucina.

Belmonte’s tomato sauces are hearty and inspired by the Irpinia region of Italy, where she was raised.

Her Sugo Di Pomodori Fresco is a simple, fresh tomato sauce with a bit of spice that makes a great pizza sauce ($8.75).

She also makes a Sugo Baldoria, using anchovies, capers and olives, and Funghi Al Pomodoro, using mushrooms as the base. 833-2300; 60 Shaw Ave, Kenwood; vjbcellars.com.
