Applications due Jan. 21 for local commissions

Tomorrow is the last day for locals to turn in applications to serve on a number of city commissions. There are no requirements to serve, just an interest in helping the community.
Planning Commission
Vacancies: one alternate
The Planning Commission deals with community issues large and small – from approving a neighbor’s addition to updating the General Plan. Commission members can enhance their community involvement by helping guide the development of the city through land-use applications. The applicant must be a city resident. Beyond that, an interest in growth, water, housing, cultural life, education and recreation are all helpful qualities in a prospective member. The commission meets at 6:30 p.m., the second Thursday of every month, in the Community Meeting Room, 177 First St. W.
The Sonoma Valley Citizens Advisory Commission (SVCAC)
Vacancies: two
The SVCAC reviews projects that affect residents both in the city and in the unincorporated areas of Sonoma Valley. The projects raise issues ranging from real estate, architecture, and general community interest. There are 11 commissioners, two alternates and two ex-officio members on the commission. Regular meetings are at 6:30 p.m., the fourth Wednesday of every month. Location varies.
Community Services and Environment Commission
Vacancies: three, at least one must be a city resident
This commission is involved with community efforts at preserving and enhancing open space and parks, including reviewing Plaza use applications. The commission generally helps the City Council to responsibly take the environment into account in their decision. Regular meetings are at 7 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month in the conference room at City Hall, No. 1, the Plaza.
Cultural and Fine Arts Commission
Vacancies: one alternate
The applicant must be a city resident. Interest in the arts is a must; a background in the arts, whether formal study or work experience in arts administration or as an artist, is helpful in the position. The commission regularly rewards talented high school senior artists and evaluates the city’s acquisitions and sponsorship of public artwork. Regular meetings are at 5:30 p.m., on the fourth Thursday of each month, in the conference room, City Hall, No. 1 The Plaza.

To be considered for appointment, your completed city application form must be submitted to City Hall by 5 p.m. on Jan. 21, 2009.
