New plans for Sonoma’s Breakaway Cafe

The Breakaway Cafe is closing, temporarily, to be reborn as Mint & Liberty. The concept is “a modern twist on a classic diner,” according to owners James Hahn and his wife Mila Chaname. Also on the team: Managing Partners Melissa Cameron and Aaron Mills.

The executive chef will be Michael Siegel, a veteran of San Francisco eateries Grand Café, Bix and Betelnut. He then opened Shorty Goldstein’s, a Jewish Deli in SF’s Financial District.

The transformation of the Maxwell Village site begins October 8. A date for the re-opening — and hopefully the debut of a New York-worthy pastrami on rye — has not been set.

If the Breakaway becomes a REAL Jewish delicatessen, it would signal that Sonoma is finally entering the modern world.
