“Doin’ It Up”

Editor: My name is Carly Dagner and I am a senior at Sonoma Valley High School. My Senior Project this year is called “Doin’ It Up For Relay For Life of Sonoma 2009” and takes place on the day of prom, Saturday, May 9. I am looking for girls to book their hair and/or makeup for prom at participating salons. In lieu of payment to the salon/stylist, a donation to The American Cancer Society will be accepted. If you are interested, please contact a participating salon to set up your appointment. Participating salons are Personal Image, The Bee Hive, Broadway Hair Company, JAC Hair Gallery, Sonoma Salon and Catalina’s Skin & Body.
For more information you may call me at 707.939.7024 or my Senior Project mentor, Renea Magnani, at 707.337.9770.

No to dispensaries

Editor: It seems our City Council and our Planning Commission are on a mission to allow marijuana dispensaries in Sonoma. Is this a good thing for our community? I don’t think so as do many Sonoman’s who have followed the discussions. Marijuana as a medical option has a lot of supporters; myself included. I also realize that members of our Council or family members use marijuana as a medical aid but don’t want to drive out of the area to get their supply. Having lived in San Francisco I can tell you first hand the problems associated with a dispensary. Many doctors see giving prescriptions as an opportunity to make money, not help someone. A prescription to aid in serious illnesses has been overtaken by prescriptions for those not “feeling well;” i.e. headaches, soreness, mad at the spouse, “feeling blue today.” You name it and marijuana will cure it.
Sonoma is a small town that depends on farming, retirees, small businesses and tourists. When people come here for Tuesday’s Farmer’s Market, are they going to stop at the nearest “marijuana doctor” to get their prescription, fill it on the Napa or Spain Street dispensary and head into the Plaza to relax and get high?
Sonoma is not a young, hip, cutting edge town. We don’t need the dispensaries in our little city.
By the way I’m 62 and I smoked and inhaled many times. If my doctor prescribed marijuana for me for a real illness I would drive to the Bay Area to get it. Before the Council goes ahead and approves this “dumb” idea all I ask is that they travel to SF and see for themselves the dispensary’s clientele and secondly take a poll on this issue. If needed lets take a vote. I’ll even help pay for the costs.

Scholarships for BGC Alumni
It’s that time of year again. High school seniors are headed toward graduation, summer time, and most importantly … college! And of course, having some funding to help pay for college never hurts. The Boys & Girls Club proudly offers two scholarships to worthy college-bound recipients each year, one for $500 and one for $1,000. All that is required is that you are an alumnus of Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley (formerly Valley of the Moon) and are willing to fill out an application.
So … parents of college-bound seniors who were once BGC members, guide your soon-to-be coop-flyers toward a scholarship that could be a difference maker for them (and you)!  For application information visit our website homepage at bgcsonoma.org, come by the Club in Maxwell Park, or call Margie Doran at 938-8544 x105.  They are due no later than Friday May 8!!  Get them in!
