Eco adventure makes 'Impact'

Continuing with its Third Thursdays Film Series, Transition Sonoma Valley presents the documentary film “No Impact Man” on Jan. 20 at the Sonoma Community Center.

The film follows author Colin Beavan’s “No Impact Project,” for which the newly self-proclaimed environmentalist vows to make as little environmental impact as possible for one year.

No more automated transportation, no more electricity, no more non-local food, no more material consumption…no problem, even in Manhattan. Until, that is, his espresso-loving, shopaholic wife and two year-old daughter are dragged into the fray.

The L.A. Times called the film “Terrifically entertaining… compelling and extremely funny.” Variety said it was, “Proof that ‘eco’ and ‘entertainment’ aren’t mutually exclusive.”
The film provides both a front-row seat into the experiment that became a national fascination and media sensation, and a behind-the-scenes look at the marital challenges that result from Colin and Michelle’s radical lifestyle change.
The film’s presenter, Transition Sonoma Valley, is building a responsive network of local citizens, groups and businesses to create a resilient, self-reliant community in response to the challenges of climate change, peak oil, and economic instability.

Find out more about the organization and the film series at the group’s new website: transitionsonomavalley.org. The site also has details about TSV’s Jan. 28-30 seminar, “Training for Transition: Building Resilient Communities for a Post-Carbon World.”

TSV meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Sonoma Community Center. Visitors are welcome! To be included on the group’s email list-serve please locate Transition Sonoma Valley on Facebook or contact Melinda Kelley at melbelkel@aol.com.
