New developments in pot farm murders

Posted on July 21, 2011 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Napa County Sheriffs made a grisly discovery at a marijuana farm in rugged terrain near the Napa-Sonoma county line on July 1 — two dead bodies.

The double homicide had taken place well before the raid to the point that the bodies of the two victims had decomposed beyond recognition. Investigators are relying on dental records and DNA tests to name them.
So far, only Wilfredo Ronaldo Rivas-Velazquez, 43, has been identified.

Authorities discovered the murder victims while responding to a tip about a mountainside pot farm east of Sugarloaf Ridge, according to Capt. Tracey Stuart. There were signs of where workers camped while tending the 3,000 plants, but nobody was at the site during the raid.

The bodies were discovered in the nearby underbrush. The tip to agents about the pot farm did not mention the murders, Stuart said.

Last week, deputies arrested a Boonville man in connection with the growing operation. Carlos Guerrero, 45, was charged with marijuana cultivation and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
He is not a suspect in the double killing, Stuart said.

Authorities have since identified Carlos Perez, 21, as a “person of interest” in the case. He reportedly walked from Rutherford, which is in the Napa Valley east of the murder site, to Napa on the night of June 21.
Perez is no longer believed to be in the Napa area, having perhaps taken a bus bound for Vallejo.
The investigation is ongoing.
