Soccer Dragon boys win overtime thriller

The Sonoma Valley High School varsity soccer boys team upended the first place Petaluma Trojans Tuesday afternoon in a 2-1 home win.

In the Dragons last few games the team has earned an early lead, only to have their opponent come back late to tie and then win. The Dragons once again dominated play early against keeping the ball in the offensive territory behind the offense of Bryan Ruiz, Miguel Guillen, Alejandro Echeverria and Manuel Young (pictured).

Midway through the first half Young broke through the Trojan defense and scored for 1-0 Sonoma lead. The defense played well on several of Petaluma’s scoring chances, with goalie Daniel Dwyer keeping the Trojans off the scoreboard the rest of the first half.

The second half was a different story as Petaluma pressed the play, and finally tied the score at the 5:00 mark. That’s when the game got real exciting, as Petaluma and Sonoma traded scoring chances: Sonoma had two breakaways nullified with offside calls, then the Trojans thought they took a 2-1 lead, but the goal was taken away with a close offside whistle.

The dragons defense of Andy Chavez, Stefan Flynn-Garcia, Pedro Napoles and Zachary Thompson he Petaluma off from there, and regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.In the 20 minute overtime period, Young scored his second goal of the contest to put the Dragons up 2-1.

Sonoma continued to apply the pressure with several corner kicks. Echeverria just missed putting the game out of reach on a breakaway blasting a shot off of the goal post. The Trojans also had a few chance to tie the contest, but Dwyer and the Sonoma defense stood up to their attacks on goal. With the win Sonoma improves its league record to 2-3, and a 5-5 mark on the season.
