Sonoma has been buzzing with stories of “the best pizza in town at a Mexican bakery.”

That Mexican bakery is Garcia’s Bakery, which produces rich, sugary, delicious traditional Mexican and European pastries for sale in the morning (the cream horn is the bomb!).

At night, Garcia’s Bakery changes into New Haven Apizza Shop – where Chef Fernando creates killer pies in a style that is unique to New Haven, Connecticut – what he describes as a “hotter, crispier descendant of a Neapolitan style pie.”

This is different than other New Haven style pizza in town. It’s thick, yet thin, foldable, yet bulbous bubbles in the crust can cause a delightful challenge in the fold.

Small to large pies, gluten free options, vegan and vegetarian are available.

And the ingredients, oh the ingredients! Chef Fernando marinates his own artichoke hearts, he roasts his own red peppers, he even bakes his own banana cream cake and tiramisu. He buys local produce and meats when able and is proud to do so.

Yeah, this guy is the real deal. He has bright eyes, a big smile, and is extremely grateful for every patron. So grateful that he invited some of his regulars over to the pizza shop/bakery to try out new dishes recently, and hands out housemade Caesar salads and desserts for diners to try – on the house.

Chef Fernando learned this beloved craft in New Haven, where he worked at iconic pizzeria’s where the famous “apizza” was created. He’s got the street cred, that’s for sure.

The menu is vast, everything is crafted with love, and for every pie that is sent out the door, Fernando’s smile resonates with each customer.

New Haven Apizza Shop is cash only and is open from 3-9 p.m. Tues-Wed-Sun, 3-10 p.m., Thurs-Fri-Sat. 931-4694. 555 5th St. W., Sonoma.
