Why the long face?

Posted on October 20, 2021 by Sonoma Valley Sun

The debut of Ghostface, the archetypal slasher-killer, came in Scream, the 1996 Wes Craven film. It also featured the likes of Courtney Cox, Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Drew Barrymore and other hotties of the day, along with Henry Winkler and a cameo from Linda ‘Exorcist’ Blair.

The real star, of course, is the Sonoma Community Center, which portrayed the fictional high school attended by the terrorized students.

Splattered among the murders are moments of campy black humor, as Craven leans into the easy cliches of the era’s slasher films. The attitude paved the way for the outright parodies of the Scary Movie franchise and other goofs, and made the Ghostface mask a Halloween staple.

The evening includes an in-person visit by Marianne Maddalen, the executive director of the film, plus a costume contest and other surprises.

Tickets are $20. 5 p.m. at Sonoma Community Center, a.k.a. Woodsboro High, 276 E. Spain Sonoma.
