The play’s the thing — almost

On Saturday, July 23, playwright Jenna Brady will read from her work in progress, an original play emerging from her time as Studio Artist in the Sonoma Community Center’s Live Exploratory Arts Department.

Brady is mid-way through her six-month residency. After the reading, she’ll invite audience comments and impressions. The session is free from 2 to 4 p.m. 

Brady, a writer and director born and raised in New York City, now lives and creates in the Bay Area. She has participated in NYC’s Winterfest play festival, Take Ten short play festival, and has produced short films with Human Pincushion Productions.  

“I believe in art as a way to give, what is so often silenced, a voice,” Brady says.  “I seek out work that opens up a conversation with viewers and creates an impact that extends beyond the work itself.”

The fully produced premier performance of Brady’s original play is scheduled for October 14-16.

The process is a first for the Live Exploratory Arts Department, lead by Creative Programs Manager Eric Jackson. 

“As we develop a new branch of creative programming, we hope this residency helps foster an appreciation for the creative process that is necessary in theater,” Jackson states.  “Hopefully this will spark curiosity and interest among our community to try it themselves.”

One of the major goals of this residency is to involve the community in the creation of new works. So far, Brady has lead public workshops and hosted an initial ‘meet the playwright’ night.
