Sonoma has earned certification through Pets Lifeline as a pet-friendly city by the Better Cities For Pets program from Mars Petcare.
This certification showcases Sonoma’s commitment to creating a pet-friendly community, welcoming pets, offering pet-friendly programs and amenities, and helping keep people and pets together in tough times.
Today, at least 60 percent of households in the U.S. include at least one pet and studies show that more people than ever view their pets as members of the family. By leading in pet-friendliness, Sonoma can make the benefits of pet ownership accessible to even more people, and be even more attractive to an ever-growing group of pet-loving residents and visitors.
To receive the certification, Sonoma met benchmarks across various traits that support pet-friendly places like local restaurants, hotels, and businesses along with our local animal shelter, Pets Lifeline. A few notable locations include restaurants HopMonk Tavern, and La Salette; wineries like Gundlach Bundschu and Larson Family Winery; and hotels such at The Lodge at Sonoma and the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn. Area parks include Bartholomew Park (and winery) Jack London Park, and the Sonoma Valley Regional Park, which also features a large and popular dog park.
Sonoma Mayor John Gurney with Marty
Sonoma Mayor John Gurney hailed the certification saying, “As a defender and protector of cats and dogs, Pets Lifeline works hard to ensure our city’s pets are cared for in every way. From reuniting lost pets with their owners to giving strays a second chance at a loving home, to helping with the pet population via its spay/neuter program, Pets Lifeline stands tall among our nonprofit organizations.”
Pets Lifeline has been a beacon of hope for Sonoma Valley’s cats and dogs since its inception in 1982. Committed to its mission of protecting and enhancing the lives of animals in need, the organization provides shelter, adoption services, humane education, and community programs. Sonoma Valley’s only animal shelter, Pets Lifeline protects and improves the lives of cats and dogs in need in Sonoma Valley through sheltering and adoption, humane education, and community programs.
