Keep Patronizing Independent Businesses in LeFever/Mattson Buildings

Editor:

While social media like Nextdoor, Instagram and Facebook can reach many more people than the online press with its paywalls, it can be a source of misinformation.  If those who post do not carefully fact check what they are posting, it then amplifies misinformation being spread, as more and more people comment and continue sharing the posts.  A recent example was a Nextdoor post that Cornerstone was closing.  What actually happened is that one of the last two independently owned, non-LeFever/Mattson-owned businesses was closing.  Speculation of mismanagement, loss of foot traffic and more were posted.  When the reality is that independently owned businesses have been leaving Cornerstone, beginning back when LeFever/Mattson purchased this piece of commercial real estate in 2019.

The facts are these:  Cornerstone as a piece of real estate is still open and owned by LeFever Mattson. It is not currently up for sale.  Cornerstone is still operating as an event venue, the LeFever/Mattson-owned restaurant, Folktable, is still open Thursday-to-Sunday, and the last remaining independent business, Meadowcroft Wines, is still leasing space and open for business.

But, more importantly, this Nextdoor thread of posts demonstrated that many do not understand or know the distinction between ownership of a business entity vs. ownership of a piece of real property, such as Cornerstone.  So to that end I would like to list the independent businesses that simply rent space from LeFever/ Mattson.  These businesses are not owned by LeFever/Mattson or KS Mattson.  While there are several businesses owned by LeFever/Mattson and, in real property, also owned by them, the businesses listed below are independently owned and all of us should support them.  One day in the future when the court cases, defaults and lawsuits all play out, there will be new owners of these buildings and these independent businesses will then be renting from whoever buys these buildings. The businesses are: Meadowcroft Wines, Harvey’s Gourmet Donuts and Artifact Design and Salvage.

So please do not be confused and please continue to support these locally owned businesses.

Dave Allen at Artefact is a local treasure. Go see his amazing showcase next to Friedman’s.

We love Harvey too. What a cool story and product he has!

It’s a bummer that we will lose the great Folk Table Restaurant soon. Please go check them out while you can and support these folks as they move forward after being a highly awarded restaurant for the past 5 years.
