Build a bot

The Stand By Me Mentoring Alliance hosted its first Toy Inventing Workshop, led by Lori Edwards (right), whose mentee Hannah shows off her very own robot. Edwards, a toy designer, helped kids design and engineer a light-up robot using a LED light and a watch battery. Each robot was designed using recycled materials, duct tape, nuts, bolts, mesh wiring, and even rhinestones.

“The outcome was a collection of uniquely engineered and designed robot prototypes that lit up the Altimira Mentor Center, and maybe even paved a path for future careers”, said Tina Baldry, the Alliance program and art director.

The workshop was one example of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) projects that the Alliance will present, with funding from an Impact100 grant.

Below, Casey poses with some of the robots made by participating mentors and mentees.
