Giants’ giant trophy visits Sonoma

Posted on January 26, 2011 by Sonoma Valley Sun

The 2010 World Series trophy will appear in Sonoma for a photo-opp on Friday, Jan 28.

The coveted hardware, 52 years in the making for long-suffering San Francisco fans, will be on display at Sonoma Community Center’s Andrews Hall for a free public viewing from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Fans will be able to view the trophy, take pictures, or have a professional photo taken.

The dress code is casual; full beards not required.

“I will be there, and at great political expense on the home front” declared August Sebastiani, who must juggle a child’s birthday and family getaway to do so. “It means the world to me as a 30 year-old lifelong Giants fan.”

Sebastiani recalled the heartbreaks of 1962 (his dad was there for game seven), 1989 and 2002, “but 2010 erased all of that. What a ride it was!”

“Our dedicated fans have supported us through thick and thin,” said Giants CEO Bill Neukom. “The trophy belongs to them as much as it belongs to us and we want to extend the World Champions celebration throughout Giants country and to thank our fans.”

Like a minor league team on a new bus, the trophy is making stops throughout northern and central California, southern Oregon and western Nevada.

For the Sonoma display, Giants staff initially contacted the Sonoma City Manager Linda Kelly about bringing the trophy to town.

The free public viewing will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Staff will do their best to accommodate all fans, but the lines will be monitored and, if needed, cut off to keep the tour on schedule.

Be advised that, much like a Tim Lincecum fastball, the trophy cannot be touched by anyone.

All fans wanting a chance to view the trophy are advised to begin lining up outside Andrews Hall at 8:30 a.m. that morning
