A ‘Dream’ at Jack London Park
Fitting of the improbable task of keeping Jack London State Park open to the public, the Transcendence Theatre Company opens its summer season this weekend with the musical revue “Dream The Impossible Dream.”
The show opens the “Broadway Under the Stars” series with performances July 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22. A portion of the proceeds from each concert will benefit the Valley of the Moon Natural History Association, which was successful in its campaign to take over operations at the Glen Ellen facility.
The theatre company is a group of professional performers with Broadway, national and international tour experience, and film and television credits. The season is scheduled to include performers from such Broadway shows as “Wicked,” “42nd Street,” “Les Miserables,” “Hairspray” and “Mary Poppins.”
The ‘Dream’ concert features tunes from “Phantom of the Opera,” “West Side Story,” “Wicked” and “A Chorus Line.” The grounds for each concert open at 5 p.m. for picnicking and wine tasting. The performance begins at 8 p.m.
“Producing Broadway musicals and concerts in such an extraordinary setting is an innovative way to help the park thrive,” said Amy Miller, artistic director.
The company has established residency in the Sonoma Valley with the goal of producing Broadway-quality musicals and concerts in the majestic open-air ruins.
“We look forward to sharing the wonder of Broadway music and the magic of Jack London State Park,” Miller said.
Rehearsals have been going very well so far, said Executive Director Stephan Stubbins, and members of the company have been performing in the area for local causes. “Including,” he said, “singing multiple numbers at the AIDS Benefit at the Sonoma Valley Inn on Saturday, which just raised over $8,000 for the Aids Walk in San Francisco, doing a free dance workshop with 100 kids from the Rohnert Park Boys & Girls Club, and singing at the Kenwood Church’s Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast.”
The company’s summer season at Jack London includes: “Fantastical Family Night,” opening August 3; “What A Wonderful World,” which opens August 16; and the Sept. 1 gala celebration, “One Day More.”
