Ron Capps is a Funny Car legend at Sonoma.

Capps made his debut at Sonoma Raceway in 1994 in a Funny Car called the “Montana Express.” He beat Jay Payne during the drag race, Capps’ racing idol and one of the greatest Funny Car racers ever.

What are Funny Cars? Well, they’re funny at that – funny shaped cars modified for drag racing with super duper aerodynamic bodies made of fiberglass or carbon fiber and forward mounted engines. They’re super fast and super powerful: in one sprint down a drag strip at Sonoma a funny car can use up to 15 gallons of fuel while going over 350 miles an hour.

They’re super charged, super fast and super badass, for lack of a better explanation. And so is Capps.

Capps is being inducted into the Sonoma Raceway Wall of Fame during the 28th annual NHRA Sonoma Nationals at Sonoma Raceway, on Sunday, August 2.

Originally from San Luis Obispo, Capps has four funny car wins at Sonoma (1997, 2010, 2011 and 2013).

“I have so many great memories in Sonoma, and it’s always truly felt like my home track. I love the facility, the fans and supporting the charity there, and it is incredibly special to be inducted.” – Ron Capps

It isn’t just about racing though. Capps is one of the most active drivers in Sonoma Speedway Children’s Charities. Since 2002, Capps has participated in events and promoted the charity, which raises millions for local Sonoma non-profits. He’s helped bring over $250,000 to our local chapter.

Capps is currently rated 2nd in Funny Car point standings – so this upcoming NHRA races will be a great chance to see the charitable and fast legend in action and have his face added to the wall which includes NorCal native son Jeff Gordon.
