The Sun’s summer intern, Dean Szanyi, is a senior at Sonoma Valley High School (SVHS). He participated in all aspects of putting out the paper, from participating in Editorial Board meetings and proofing articles, to distributing papers and doing Sun on the Street interviews.

The internship was part of his Senior Project; his research paper will be on freedom of the press and “its importance to the United States and to our democracy,” he said.

Dean also wrote several articles: one on author Anthony Ray Hinton, who was part of an authors’ series at SVHS; another on voter suppression and the importance of exercising your right to vote; and a guest editorial on the SVHS dress code.

Describing some of his interests, Szanyi said “I’m really into music – I play guitar and piano. I taught myself how to play both.” He’s also an avid swimmer. Favorite subjects at school? “History, art, and video production.”
