Search is on as John Gurney steps down from Sonoma Community Center

After four years at the helm of the Sonoma Community Center, John Gurney has announced that he is stepping down as executive director effective July 1.

A search for a new executive director is underway. Gurney plans to continue through June 30, or until a new ED has transitioned into the role.

“It has been a privilege to help preserve an organization that has been in existence since 1952 in a building that is 106 years old and a historic landmark,” said Gurney.  “With the vision and support of the Board, this has been a fun and rewarding job.  I have to thank the generous community and the talented, creative and dedicated staff that makes it all come together to brighten lives.”

Gurney, 62, the former Sonoma Police Chief, was hired in March of 2017.

Gurney’s tenure, according to Board President Steve MacRostie, “has been instrumental in putting the Center back on solid financial footing, building a strong and innovative staff, successfully guiding SCC through annual fires and thus far through the COVID-19 pandemic, and enhancing the historic building and gardens.”

Under Gurney, the offerings of classes and events at SCC have expanded significantly to include seminars, tutorials, and workshops open to the public, both in person, prior to the pandemic, and now virtual.  The Center is using the latest technology which has opened these classes to a wide audience across the United States, MacRostie said.

A search for a new executive director is underway. Gurney plans to continue as Executive Director through June 30, 2021 or until a new ED has transitioned into the role. Interested applicants should email their resume and cover letter to the Recruitment Committee at: jobapp@sonomacommunitycenter.org by January 15, 2021.

Currently, the Sonoma Community Center and offices are closed to the public due to COVID regulations.
